Obsessed: Summer Braids

Ever since I saw Blake Lively’s long, messy and perfectly imperfect braid at the 2009 Emmy Awards, my love for this once sandbox-only hairstyle was renewed. She looked so carefree and confident (her enviable Versace gown didn’t hurt, either) and the look stood apart from the usual array of award-show updos and bouncy blowouts. She wore it in September, but the look screams summer to me. It’s the epitome of undone chic and casual glamour, which seems to be what we strive for during those sweaty July and August days when even just two swipes of mascara seems too difficult to accomplish.

Aside from the influence of braids on film (the Katniss braid, anyone?), many designers have incorporated braids into their runway looks. I was particularly inspired last summer by Mara Hoffman’s combination of messy volume on the head leading to a contained set of fishtail braids down the back. The look was decidedly here to stay, as many designers like Valentino and Michael Kors sent braided beauties down the Spring/Summer 2012 runways.

The look is surprisingly easier to achieve than you would think, with a little teasing at the root and basic braiding skills. Once you’ve mastered the basics, get creative with a fishtail, a side braid, or two pinned back. I found Australian beauty blogger Chloe Morello’s tutorial particularly easy to follow along and a versatile look for day or night.

The products I love for holding braids are Bumble and Bumble’s texturing Surf Spray, which I find creates the perfect base of tousled hair. The brand’s Thickening Hairspray holds the look for hours.
